Curriculum Resource Guide

The curriculum topic I chose to do my curriculum resource guide on was weather with the intended age group of second graders. According to the SC state science standard 2-3, The student will demonstrate an understanding of daily and seasonal weather conditions. By incorporating 7 fiction books, 7 non-fiction books, a chapter book, a poem, and 3 websites, students will be able to learn about weather through fun, interactive, and informative resources. 7 Fiction Books:
- Twister by Darleen Beard
- Summary: This book is about 2 children who experience their first tornado. Although mama makes sure they get to the cellar safely, she has to leave Lucille and Natt to go help Mr. Lyle, an elderly neighbor. She tells the children to not open the door to the cellar until she comes back. However, she does not come back and Lucille must comfort matt throughout this terrifying experience.
- Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett
- Summary: This book puts a funny spin on how how weather can affect people’s environment. Life in Chewandswallow is great. Instead of snow, wind, or rain, they get a different kind of weather that falls from the sky three times a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The only bad part about living in Chewandswallow is that the people don't get their choice of what they'd like to fall from the sky. However, no one is too worried about the weather, until it takes a turn for the worse — the portions of food get larger and larger and fall faster and faster, until everyone in the town is scared. They all need to think of a plan, and they need one fast!
- Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacca
- Summary: A loud clap of thunder booms, and shakes the windows of Grandma's old farmhouse. Grandma says that it is thunder baking time as she and her granddaughter hurry to gather the ingredients around the farm. A real Thunder Cake must reach the oven before the storm arrives. But the list of ingredients is long and not easy to find… and the storm is coming closer.
- Like a Windy Day by Frank Asch
- Summary: A father and son bring the wind to life and send a young girl soaring, tumbling, and twirling on an exciting adventure on this magical windy day.
- Hurricane by Cornnie Davis
- Summary: Margo and her family prepare their home as a hurricane approaches. After the storm passes, Margo observes the damage as her family manages without necessities like electricity and clean water.
- Bizarrd by John Rocco
- Summary: This book begins with a little boy's excitement upon seeing the first snowflake fall outside his class window.The boy watches his neighborhood transform into a white wonderland and readers watch him transform into a hero who puts the needs of others first. He ends up saving the day and surviving the blizzard.
- Toad Weather by Sandra Markie
- Summary: There's nothing to do on a rainy day or so Ally thinks. But Mama says she's seen something amazing, so she sets out on an adventure with her mother and grandmother. On her journey, she sees all sorts of things: dripping awnings, wet cardboard, splashing cars...but also earthworms, storm drain geysers, and oil slick patterns.

- Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs
- Summary: This is a true story about a Vermont farm boy named Wilson Bentley. Wilson loved snowflakes. His dream was to take pictures of snowflakes but they always ended up melting before he could. As he grew older, he acquired a microscope with a camera. He spent his life taking beautiful snowflake pictures and learning more about them. Wilson was a self-taught scientist. We learn about his life and snowflake science.
- Hurricanes by Michael Woods and Mary B. Woods
- Summary: This book explains why hurricanes occur, how we prepare for them and examines the history of some of the most famous hurricanes.
- Why does it Rain? by Will Mara
- Summary: This book explains how and why rain falls from the sky.
- Clouds by Valerie Bodden
- Summary: This book explores clouds, how they are formed, and the potential problems they can cause.
- How Weather Works by Robin Birch
- Summary: This book teaches readers everything they need to know about Earth's climate and weather.
- Tornado by Jessica Rudolph
- Summary: This book provides basic information about tornados, the damage they cause, and how to stay safe when they occur.
- Thunderstorms by Valerie Bodden
- This book goes into great detail how thunderstorms develop, the relationship between lightening and thunder, and the damage they cause.
Chapter Book:
Twister on Tuesday by Mary Pope Osborne
Summary: In Twister on Tuesday, Jack and Annie are whisked to a midwestern prairie in the 1870s. They visit a one-room schoolhouse and learn about the hard life of the pioneers. When they return to the magic tree house, Jack and Annie spot a twister on the not to far. Is there time to warn the teacher and the children back at the schoolhouse?
